Returned on Trillium Gap Trail, going up to Brushy Mountain, back via Grotto Falls and the bridle trail to Cherokee Orchard. The McCarters and Humphrey's also made the trip.

We saw Tim Line, Jeff Cogdill, Allen Hunter, Alan Householder, Abbie and Rhonda. As we went up we met John and Ruth Davis, Charles Bean and three large groups. There was no ice! The weather was perfect! The views were great! On our return we talked to John and Donna Mansfield on the trail. 9 to 3:15.

657 November 28, 1994 Monday, rain then clearing. 11 miles. Kenneth Eckert and I hiked to LeConte via the Alum Bluff Trail. We met Tom Morgan and Ed Wright, who were coming down. Near the Lodge we talked to Sara Barnaby and Charlie, who were cutting down trees, which had fallen across the trail. Sara, who will serve as caretaker until January, invited us into the kitchen and offered us hot chocolate. Ken had brownies for them. We saw a Ruffed grouse. 9:15 to 3:30.658. March 22, 1995 Wednesday, mostly cloudy. 11 miles. I had no trouble making it to the Lodge. Howard and Kelly Conway, Otis Beaver, Ann Bird, Bobbi Dishman, Bob Brown, Bill Reagan, Bill Broome, Clyde Jones, Don McWilliams, Ermentrout Powell, Lisa Jarrell, Dolph Goodin, Brenda Marshall, and four of Bill Broome's friends went up the Alum Bluff Trail. Met Ed Wright and Jason Schultze on the trail. Ed made my picture with Jason. We ate in the office, because of the threatening weather. The Lodge season will open Friday, the 24th. We talked with two women, who were carrying dummies up the trail, in order to teach CPR to the crew. I talked with Scott Ferree, John and Donna Mansfield, and Abbie. Bill Broome's friends went down the Bullhead Trail. 8:50 to 2:45.

659. March 30, 1995 Thursday, a perfect day! 11 miles. Norma Effler, Susan Shanks, and I hiked the Alum Bluff trail to the Lodge. It was Susan's first trip. I took the record of my 655 trips from October 1960 to October 1994 for John Mansfield. We met Bill Sharp on the trail. Susan was delighted to talk with a group from Elgin, Illinois. She grew up there, graduating from high school. 8:45 to 3:48.

660. April 3, 1995 Monday, sunny and cool. 11 miles. Posey Congleton, Conni Collins, and I hiked the Alum Bluff Trail. Conni tripped over a stump midway, and cut above her eye, and below her lower lip. We stopped to take care of her, figuring that we could need to take her down the mountain. She received much sympathy from us, as well as the overnighters coming down from the Lodge. She insisted on continuing the hike. We met Bo and Shirley Henry, Ed Wright, and Henry Neel. Talked with Scott Ferree at the Lodge. After we had lunch, a crew member (probably Donna Mansfield) doctored the cuts with Neosporin. 8:45 to 5:00.

661. April 10, 1995 Monday, sunny, clear and hot. 11 miles. The temperature reached 89 degrees today in Knoxville, breaking the record by 4 degrees. Edwin Best Jr., his children, Catherine and John, and I were cool on the Alum Bluff Trail. We met Ed Wright. Tom Morgan, Dave Scanlon, and the Crosses of St. Louis were on the porch at lunchtime. 8:30 to 2:30. The Best's went much faster.

662. April 17, 1995 Monday, rain. 11 miles. Ann Ray and I hiked the Alum Bluff Trail to the Lodge. I walked alone most of the way. Ann had trouble making it, but joined me for lunch in the office. As we returned, she was so cold that she went ahead of me for the last two miles. I walked the last two miles with Charlie Patterson, a crew member at the Lodge. 8:55 to 2:50.

663. April 28, 1995 Friday, sunny. 11 miles. Mike Miller and I hiked to the Lodge via Alum Bluff. We talked with Jim and Caroline Haynes and her tennis coach Cash of Chattanooga. Later, we walked partway with Jim. While eating lunch on the porch, we talked with crew member Bruce Newman. 8:30 to 3:00.

664. May 3, 1995 Wednesday, sunny and cool. 11 miles. Howard Conway, Clyde Jones, Randall Sumner, Bob and Ann Bird, Bobbi Dishman, Jeri Woods, Mary Morgan, and I hiked Alum Bluff Trail to the Lodge. I found five painted trillium in bloom, the white erect trillium, bluets, witch hobble (viburnum), and sweet white violets. On our return, we met Bill and Marian Broome, her brother Tippy and wife Jean Miller, of Jackson, Tennessee, who were going to the lodge for overnight. Near the top, the ice from the trees was dropping on us. There was quiet a bit of it on the trail. 8:30 to 3:00.

665. May 8, 1995 Monday, sunny. 11 miles. When Lucy Hughes arrived at my house at 8:35 a.m.., She surprised me by suggesting that we go to LeConte via Alum Bluff. She would hike as far as the upper steps, and wait for me to go the rest of the way alone. I met Ed Wright, who said that Jim Rice and a lovely young woman were on the trail ahead of me. As I ate lunch, I talked with Bruce Newman. Lucy was waiting for me at the steps. Sara Barnaby and Scott Ferree came down the trail. Sara walked partway with us. I counted fifty-six painted trillium and thirty-six erect trillium, along with many bluets and one elderberry bush in bloom. Jim and Robbie caught up with us at the trailhead. They plan to be married in June. I inadvertently left my special walking stick besides the car. Robbie brought it to the house an hour after Lucy and I arrived home. 10:00. to 4:00.

666. May 23, 1995 Tuesday, partly cloudy and mild. 11 miles. Bo and Shirley Henry, Robin Schuster, Steve Foster, George and Sandra Reed, Dottie and Ray Bernard and I drove from Snowbird Mountain Lodge to the Alum Bluff Trailhead via Cherokee. It was a wonderful day with a special group. The painted trillium are almost gone. We saw some Catawba rhododendron and wild cherry in bloom. 10:00 to 4:00.

667. June 8, 1995 Thursday, sunny and hot. 11.5 miles. Mike Miller, his daughter Gretchen, and I hiked the Alum Bluff Trail to the Lodge. After greeting John and Donna Mansfield and signing in, we went up to Cliff Top for lunch. 9:10 to 4:10.

668. June 21, 1995 Wednesday, rainy and mild. 11 miles. Bobbi Dishman, Ann Bird, Bill Broome, Bill Reagan, Mary Morgan, Clyde Jones, Debbie Way, Dale Smelcer, Earl and Skip Smith went to LeConte. Bobbi, Ann and I did the Alum Bluff Trail. The others went via the Boulevard Trail and down Alum Bluff Trail. We met Ed Wright. I talked with most of the crew: Jennie Knowles, Scott Ferree, Bruce Newman, Jeanie Roseboom, April Campbell, Tim and Nathan Line. Because the rain started as we reached the Lodge, we ate in the office. Had showers on our way down.

669. June 22, 1995 Thursday mostly cloudy and mild 11 miles. Catherine Harvey, Kristi Simpson, Donna North and I did the Alum Bluff Trail to the Lodge, eating lunch on the porch with the squirrels jumping all over us.

670. June 23, 1995 Friday, cloudy, rain, sunny 11 miles. Lucy Hughes surprised me again by suggesting that we go to LeConte via Alum Bluff. I stayed behind with her for the first two miles. Near the Bluff, she insisted that I go ahead. After walking alone for a mile, I joined Harley and Carol Snider, Mike and Mary Huff, who were heading for the Lodge. Harley and I went ahead until the rain started, then he went back to give Carol her poncho. I continued alone, and ate lunch in the office with Jim Rice and Tim Campbell. The upper steps. I walked the rest of the way alone grateful that the rain had stopped. Lucy was waiting at the car or me. 8:45 to 2:15. On my way I met Brad Oliver and his wife of Milledgeville, Georgia. He knows George Hall, who sings in the choir and plays organ on occasion at my church.

671. June 29, 1995 Thursday some rain 11 miles. Kristi Simpson and I were Joined by Joseph, Brenda, and Nick Bledsoe for most of the hike to LeConte Lodge. We met Bill, Jr., wife Amy, and daughter Megan Broome, who had stayed overnight. We ate lunch on the porch while visiting with Henry Neel, John Mansfield, and his niece April. On our descent, we met Norma Effler, Bob, Joy, Ellen and Alec Sutton just above the Bluff. They were going up for an overnight. We had rain, and so did they, the rest of the way. 7:50 to 2:30.

Melvin and Susie Beard, Terry and Janet Bunde, and I me Bo and Shirley Henry, Norma Effler, Bob, Joy, Ellen, and Alec Sutton, as we headed up the Alum Bluff Trail. We talked with Henry Neel, as we ate lunch in the office. Ed Wright arrived with Paul Efird of the Knoxville News Sentinel. This was Ed's eight hundredth trip to LeConte. I talked with Bill Sharp as we returned. 7:50 to 2:15.

Edgar the raven is back. We talked with Charlie Patterson, later met Bruce Newman on the trail. Also, Betsy Jones, Ron Millsaps, and three Korean doctors from Sylva, North Carolina. 675. July 13, 1995 Thursday, sunny and hot. 11 miles. Kristi Simpson and I went to the Lodge via Alum Bluff. Kristi had to fight off the squirrels on the porch, as we ate lunch. It was great entertainment! We met many people from Knoxville, on our return, who recognized Kristi and me. 7:45 to 2:15.

676. July 17, 1995 Monday, partly cloudy and cool. 11 miles. This was my 83rd birthday hike to LeConte via Alum Bluff with sixty-two friends. The crew served us cake, coffee, and hot chocolate. Lloyd Bell provided my lunch. John Styles of the Knoxville News Sentinel did the publicity. We saw the first turtle head blooms. It was an exciting day!

677. July 20, 1995 Thursday, a perfect day. 11 miles. Kristi Simpson and had another happy time going to the LeConte via the Alum Bluff Trail. We saw a small bear, as well as four squirrels on the porch. On our return, we met John Law and his friend. 7:50 to 2:10.

My son Bill Stevenson, and grandson Clark, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, met John and Donna Mansfield with Niece April at the beginning of the Alum Bluff Trail. Later talked with Ed Wright. 9:10 to 3:45.679. July 27, 1995 Thursday sunny and hot, 11 miles. Because Kristi Simpson knew it would be cooler on LeConte than going to Mt. Cammerer, which had been her earlier suggestion, we repeated the Alum Bluff, our favorite. We were almost to the upper steps before we met the overnighters. By going early and not stopping, as we had done the day before, I did the walking much more easily. Kristi cleared the trail of much trash on our return. We saw the buck, doe and faun near the top. 7:40 to 2:10.

680. August 4, 1995 Friday, cloudy, some rain. 11 miles. Ellie and Sabrina Doughty, Heather Mathis, and I met Ed Wright on the Alum Bluff Trail. In the Lodge kitchen, I talked with Lisa, Tim, Nathan and Grace Line, and saw baby Jacob Paul for the first time. It was cold and rainy on the top. Soon after we started back, Ellie realized she had left her new water bottle in the office. While she ran back to get it, the girls and I walked the level part of the trail, in order to keep warm. We saw the bear, a great thrill for the eleven-year-olds. They also had fun playing in Alum Creek near the end of the hike. 9:05 to 4:00.

681. August 10, 1995 Thursday, cloudy, hard rain. 11 miles. This was Kristi Simpson's last hike for the summer. She will be on vacation for a week, before returning to her position of guidance counselor at the Knoxville School for the Deaf. We walked most of the way with two Federal Agents, Larry and Alan, who are stationed in Oak Ridge. On our return, we met the Thursday hikers, several of whom I know: Ruth Ewald, Reba Haynes, Jenny Whitehead, and Mr. Creel Burns, who was celebrating his eighty-first birthday by hiking with his daughter and the group. We also saw Jean Lambert. The grass-of-parnassus and closed gentian were in bloom. The heavy rains came at the last. 7:50 to 2:10.

693. April 15, 1996 via Rainbow Falls and Bull Head Trails. Saw John and Donna Mansfield, Henry Neel, Jeff and the Llamas. John gave me the 1996 shirt, with a picture of the Lodge painted by Lisa Line. Mary Morgan and Myra Moore walked partway down with us. 7:15 to 4:40. We saw spring beauties, hepatica in bloom.

694. April 10, 1996 via Trillium Gap Trail to the Lodge in snow with Bill Broome, Clyde Jones, Calvin Campbell, Bob Large, Don McWilliams, Mary Morgan, Helen Lobertini, Howard Conway, Jeri Woods, Bob and Judy Riffe, Otis Beaver, Laura Smith, and Dora Turner. Talked with Tim and Grace Line. Much mud on the trail, as we returned, from Grotto Falls to the cars. 8:40 to 7:55 for six of us. The others went faster.

695. April 22, 1996 via Rainbow Falls and Bull Head Trails with Bo and Shirley Henry. Tom Morgan and Dave Scanlon passed us. Talked with John and Donna Mansfield and Jeff. Henry Neel told us about Ed Wright. We saw dwarf ginseng, squirrel corn, Dutchman's breeches, Fraser sedge, many spring beauties and trillium, and two showy orchis. 7:00 to 5:55.

696. May 16, 1996 via Bullhead Trail up and down with Helen Lobertini. We found clintonia, spring beauties, white erect trillium, white fringed phacelia, one pink lady slipper, dentaria diphylla, Canada violets, sweet white violets, yellow mandarin, bishop's cap, Solomon's Seal, false Solomon's Seal, umbrella leaf, and many other flowers in bloom. We met David Scanlon, Margaret Metz and her husband. At the Lodge we greeted John and Donna Mansfield, who told us the happy news that they are expecting a baby in January. We talked with Wayne Jones and Lisa Burke. The Snowbird Mountain Lodge friends, lead by Jim Burbank came up the Rainbow Falls Trail, and walked down with us. They included: Bob and Connie Rhudy, Tillie Carter, Jimmy and Cliff Bradford and the Jacksons. 7:10 to 6:00.

697. May 23, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff with Steve Foster, Robin Schuster, Ray and Dottie Bernard. We drove from Snowbird Mountain Lodge. Robin's friend, Debbie Wilson joined us at the trailhead. We were impressed with the improvements on the newly opened trail. Bob and Dottie Ely, Bruce Newman, and Henry Neel visited with us at the Lodge. 10:45 to 4:30.

698. May 26, 1996 via Alum Bluff with Ed and Caroline Best and Shirley Henry. We met Tom Morgan on the trail, Tim Line at the Lodge, and John Haynes as we started down. The Catawba rhododendron is beginning to bloom. The painted trillium and the witch hobble (viburnum) are almost finished. We found a few of the clintonia borealis. 7:45 to 2:45.

700. June 1, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff Trail with Ellie and Sabrina Doughty, Heather Mathes, Ann Marie Collins, Suzanne Morrison, Sue Jenkins, and Kathy Sedgley. The crew had an applesauce cake for all of us, including Elgin Kintner, David Smith, Debbie Maxey, James and Misty Hall, Michael Delong, Mae and Roger Snyder. John and Donna Mansfield, Darcy Williams, and Duffy Walls (chaplain). Those in our group gave me a LeConte shirt. The overnighters had made a plaque for me. Ed Wright and David Scanlon met us on the trail. Most of the group went to Cliff Top. 8:40 to 4:55.

701. June 5, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff with Ethel Rosenfeld, Carol and Don Ditzenberger, Ruthanne Chase, Lawrence Huston, Andy and Adam McCall, Rachel Roe, Eric Obermiller, Paige, and others of Maryville College Summer Institute. We met Betty Jane Barnett and others of Somerset, Kentucky group, Ed Wright and Tom Morgan. 9:25 to 4:05.

702. June 15, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff with Leslie Alt, Jo Worden, Becky Jones, Cheryl Land. We saw Tim, Lisa, Grace, and Jacob Line at the Lodge. The mountain laurel, Catawba and Caroline rhododendron, bluets, clintonia borealis, sweet white violets and mountain myrtle, blue haw (viburnum) and wood sorrel were in bloom. 8:25 to 3:30.

703. July 1, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff with Bo and Shirley Henry. We ate lunch in the office with Marvin, Susie, and Jimmy Beard, Michael Hyde, Bob Siever, and Ed Wright. I visited with John and Donna Mansfield and Valerie, who is spending the summer with them. Wayne Jones, crew member walked partway down with us. 7:10 to 2:15.

704. July 4, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff with Kristi Simpson. The overnighters reported to us that the temperature had fallen to 39 degrees during the night. Ed Wright was working hard on the trail. He ate lunch with us on the porch in the warm sunshine. We talked with Henry Neel, and greeted other members of the crew, as well as several hikers. We met Joy, Bob, Ellen, and Alex at the Bluff, on our return. 7:40 to 3:15.

705. July 6, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff with Barbara Caldwell, Hank Yuen, Randy and James Hall. Henry Neel told me the sad news that Donna Mansfield had been flown by helicopter to the University of Tennessee with a possible miscarriage. I talked with Duffy Walls. Saw Wayne limping around with a knee injury. Ellen and Ann Farrar greeted me, as did Barbara Bolin and Susan Wilson, who was staying overnight at the shelter. Kay Carpenter walked down with us. 7:50 to 3:40.

706. July 11, 1996 via Alum Cave Bluff with Norma Hunt and Kristi Simpson. Ed Wright had notified that the cable at Arch Rock was very loose. We were pleased to find that it had been tightened. We talked with Darcy Williams, Ruth Ewald, Bob and Dottie Ely, Joanne Freshour, and many others of the Thursday hiking group. We met Jeanie Renfro and her three-year-old son, Marian Oates, and many others coming up the trail. Kristi went down fast. Our time was 8:15 to 4:00.

707. July 17, 1996 Wednesday cloudy, some rain 11 miles.  Ed and Sarah Best, Pam Jarvis, and I met many friends, and also Brian Uzwiak and Darryl Sullivan of the Daily Times, at the Alum Cave Bluff Trailhead at 8.15. By 8.30 we were on our way up the trail. Many went ahead. Some of those on the trip were: Otis Beaver, Ann Bird, Bill Broome, Eleanor Burbank, Calvin Campbell, Howard Conway, Janie and Elizabeth Dempster, and her friend, Dolph Goodin, Clyde Jones, Helen Lobertini, Don McWilliams, Traudel Powell, Bill Reagan, Dale Smelcer, Bob Large, Tom Wainner, Aggie Jones, Chris Hammill, Joe, Sue, and Caroline Dawson, Mary and Katherine Leatherwood, Mary Ann and John Cropp, Jean Lambert, Paige Lambert Wallace, Jeri Woods, Bonny Barbier, Judy Hill and friend, Susan Mohr, Norma Hunt, Betty Dodd, Pat Stimus, Kathy Sholtanis, Joe Leonard, Sammie Gregory, Anna Marie Stefanic, JoAnn Freshour, Ann Brentwood, Betty Jane Barnett, along with Ed, Sarah, Pam, and me. Those with me, reached the Lodge at 12 noon. The crew served all with apple cake. It took us from 1.30 to 4.40 for the descent. Many people wished me "Happy Birthday." A group of young people from Lansing, Michigan sang for us.

708. July 29, 1996 Monday some rain 11 miles.  Bill, Rosemary, Rachael, Clark Stevenson, and I hiked the Alum Cave Bluff Trail to LeConte Lodge. We met Ed Wright, who said that he would put my other hikes on his computer if I send them to him before he leaves for Florida on August 10th. His son, Bill has a computer scanner and can copy my hikes for his computer. We talked to Henry Neel. Jeff, who brings up the llamas, introduced us to some of his family. I enjoyed talking to Tasmania Devil, the first llama. Rosemary and Clark took many pictures. Clark and Rachael came down faster than the rest of us. Our time was 9.30 to 4.30. It rained hard for the last mile.

709. August 3, 1996 Saturday partly cloudy 11 miles.  Tom Ellis and I did the Alum Cave Bluff Trail to LeConte Lodge. He went on to Cliff Top, while I walked the last mile alone. I did not need any help on the trail, even when descending. Tom brought me up-to-date on his family and his new job. We saw jewel weed, turtlehead, bush honeysuckle, Rugel's Indian plantain, Krigia Montana, cone flower, and Michaux's saxifrage in bloom. On our return, we met a young woman, who asked me how far it was to the cave. I explained that it was a bluff. She was carrying a flashlight for exploring. 8.55 to 3.40.

710. August 8, 1996 Thursday sunny and hot 11 miles.  Kristi Simpson and I did the Alum Cave Bluff Trail to LeConte Lodge. I saw Donna Mansfield, Valerie, Matt, and Henry Neel. As we ate lunch, we talked with Mary Chollman, Ann Marie Stefanic, Pam Castleman, and others of the Thursday group. On our return, we met Ruth Ewald, Joe Haynes, Terry Chandler, his brother and other family members. We found a beautiful walking stick, which I guessed belonged to Terry. I sent it up to him by a hiker we met. Talked with Dr. David Neiman of Appalachian State University at Boone, North Carolina. He is interested in studying older people, said he would like to talk further with me sometime. I saw monkshood, closed gentian, jewel weed, Krigia Montana, and other wild flowers. 7.45 to 2.55.

711. August 16, 1996 Friday sunny and cool 11 miles.  Kay Carpenter, Junita Gardner, and I hiked the Alum Cave Bluff Trail to LeConte Lodge. Henry Neel was coming down early. At the Lodge, we talked with Darcy Williams, John and Donna Mansfield, and the Dick Moores. On our return, we greeted Jean Lambert, Stephen and Gail Findlay, Roger and Brian Maness. The grass-of-parnassus is blooming. 7.30 to 3.25.

712. August 29, 1996 Thursday sunny and mild 11 miles.  Mary Ellen, Ann and Matthew Farrar, and I hiked the Alum Cave Bluff Trail to LeConte Lodge. I walked alone most of the way. They were ahead at first, then stopped to rest and eat a snack. I met and talked with Ed Wright, who was completing his 900th trip. Because he is copying much of my journal, he noted that I had left out March 12th. I'll copy that and send it to him. I ate quietly in the office, talking with Bruce Newman and a couple from Chattanooga, who took my picture. Ann and Matt went to Cliff Top. Mary Ellen was sitting beside the trail, as I returned, waiting for them. The three of them eventually caught up with me. Henry Neel helped me across the one difficult place, and Matt gave me a hand now and then. 9.05 to 3.55.


713. September 7, 1996 Friday beautiful day 11 miles.  Ellie Doughty came for me as she took her daughter Sabrina to the Middle School. We drove to the Alum Cave Bluff Trailhead. After Ellie went ahead the last two miles, I walked alone until I met Mark Byerly of St. Louis, who joined me for the last part of the hike to the Lodge. As I ate lunch in the office, I talked with Lisa Burke and Donna Mansfield, crew members, and a couple from Indiana. I started down alone, with Ellie catching up with me after the first mile. She went ahead at the last. 9.20 to 4.05.

714. September 18, 1996 Wednesday mostly sunny and cold 11 miles.  Bobbi Dishman and I hiked the Alum Cave Bluff Trail to LeConte Lodge. Ann Bird caught up with us before we reached the Lodge. We met Ed Wright, who said that he had left his computer copies of my hikes from 1960 through 1984 at the Sugarlands Visitors' Center. I had left my journals for 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 for him. On the way down we met the Brownings, and in the Visitors' Center I was greeted by the Russos. Both couples had met me on the trail in 1995. Eighteen of our group did the Boulevard Trail, returning via Alum Cave Bluff. Bob Bird caught up with us. 8 to 3.10.

715. October 19, 1996 Saturday sunny and cold 11 miles.  Tom Ellis, Ken and Jamie Sloan, and I hiked to LeConte on the Alum Cave Bluff Trail. We met Ron Valentine, Tom Morgan, Lisa Burke, and Bruce Newman, as they were coming down. Tim, Nathan and Grace Line were at the Lodge, along with swarms of others. Wayne Jones gave me pictures of my birthday trip. 9.05 to 4.15. Traffic was heavy for the trip home. Ken gave me a pineapple from Hawaii.

716. November 1, 1996 Friday rain, mild 5.5 miles.  There was plenty of time for me to do the monthly accounts, write in my journal, and clean house before Tom Cronan, Dianne Ward, Herman and Joyce Cupit came for me. At the Sugarlands Visitors' Center, we met the rest of our group: Joan Cronan, Morris, Trish, and Leigh Irvin, Larry Fields, Larry and Nancy Owens, John Savage, Ron Leadbetter, and Mary Ellen Tarrants. We drove together to the Alum Cave Bluff Trail. Ron, Nancy and I started ahead of the others, stopping briefly at Alum Cave Bluff for lunch. We met Ed Wright, Tom Morgan, and Ron Valentine. The rain had stopped by the time we continued up the trail to the Lodge. 11.15 to 2.30. The others came in at various times. Dianne, Mary Ellen, and I were in Cabin 7. We had the usual delicious dinner and delightful evening. We stayed warm all night. It was too rainy to go to Cliff Top. I talked with the Williams group from Birmingham. One couple is building a home on Carrs Creek in Townsend.

November 2, 1996 Saturday ice at the Lodge sunny 5.5 miles. Hike down. I slept well, then lay quietly until Mary Ellen was ready to walk to the bathroom with me. It was too cloudy to go to Myrtle Point for the sun rise. After a hearty breakfast, we all headed down the mountain. Tom was most helpful with me. 9.20 to 12.50.January 3, 1997 Friday cloudy, then sunny and warm 7.0 miles.

Not Counted The ice was gone on Alum Cave Bluff Trail! Ellie Doughty, Lots Costanza and I hiked almost to the upper steps, ate lunch and returned. We talked with Dave Scanlon. Saw many people on our return, most of them from other states. It was the first trip up LeConte for Lots. She did well, not stopping at all. We had fun visiting with people and giving out my personal cards. 8:35 to 1:35.

717. May 5, 1997 Monday sunny and cool 1.0 miles.  Lois Costanza and I hiked the Alum Cave Bluff Trail to LeConte Lodge. Trip 717 for me. It was her first. We met Tom Morgan, Wayne Jones and Ed Wright as they came down the mountain. We talked with Tim Line and Melanie Mansfield at the Lodge, and saw Jeff and the llamas, and Brandon. Workers were putting a new roof on the office building. On the return trip a delightful couple from Switzerland took our picture. Lois was a great help to me. I couldn't have made the trip without her. 8:15 to 4:35.

718. May 21, 1997 Wednesday sunny and mild 11.0 miles.  Lois Costanza and I met Al Auxier at the Foothills Parkway and rode with him to the Alum Cave Bluff Trailhead for my 718th hike to LeConte. We saw several jacks-in-the-pulpit, painted trillium, sand myrtle, two purple wake robin, white erect trillium, witch hobble and many bluets. We had a warm greeting from Tom Morgan, who had already been up to the Lodge. Ed Wright walked part way with us. 7:25 to 3:40. The great joy was to meet Calvin Campbell and Cecil Rowe as we came down the trail. At the parking area several of my Wednesday hikers, who had done the Boulevard Trail, greeted me warmly. Lois took me to the home of Mary Ellen Farrar for supper with Kyoko Oishi, Pat Stimus, Sue Jenkins and Norma Hunt.

May 28, 1997 Wednesday, rain then clearing 3.0 miles.  Bob and Ann Bird, Annabelle Libby, and Lois Costanza canceled our hike on the Middle Prong because of the weather forecast. By 8:30 the rain had stopped. I walked my usual circuit. Wrote letters to Ed Wright, John and Donna Mansfield, the Line family and Judy to say that I have decided that it is too risky for me to take any more trips to LeConte Lodge. I have no trouble going up the Alum Cave Bluff Trail, but the downhill, even with help, is more difficult. I telephoned Margie about this.
