Ed, We hiked up to LeConte on Monday, 10/23 and back on Tuesday. Well, I survived the trip, at least for now anyway. I am not sure I will make it to the weekend. I had been suffering with a bad cold / sinus infection a week before the trip, but I was feeling better, so I decided to go anyway. What was a surprise was that when we pulled onto the Roaring Fork Road, it began to snow. So, our trip up the Trillium Gap Trail was quite an adventure.
My wife is in great shape, she runs 40-50 miles per week, so this was nothing for her. Unfortunately for me, I don't even run 2 miles per week, so with my physical condition (my fault) and with my now recurring cold (coughing my head off and a slight fever), I had a miserable trip up and back. All of that said, the folks at the Lodge were great, the food was fantastic.
We met some folks there that were a walking history book of the area (Davis). She was raised in Cades Cove, her father was the last living person in Cades Cove.
You warned me about being prepared for the weather, so I have to discount the fact that we got their first snow of the year and that it was 15 degrees at 6:00 pm. or the fact that our shoes were frozen to the floor on Tuesday morning. All in all, I would consider this a success (if I survive). I think my wife wants to take our son (who does run) on the next trip.
Not as bad as I make it sound, we did have a good time. Thanks for your site and the work, it helped me in what to expect.
