Howard and Kathy Frampton's 2nd trip and David Kindred's 1st trip to Mt. LeConte via ACB Trail Sept. 15, 2009 |
| We were excited that I was able to get reservations again to stay at this amazing place. Two days before the trip Howard and I took my mom up the ACB trail for the day. We had beautiful weather and could see all the mountains around us. Once you got past Inspiration Point you saw the berries in bloom and of course the evidence of bears that had been on the trail. Luckily, we never saw any except the two on the side of the road eating while we drove to the trailhead Tuesday morning. Uncle David had us up and going very early Tuesday morning. We were at the trailhead at 7:30 and on our way. Before we knew it, we were at Alum Cave taking a break. We stopped a few other places along the way to enjoy the scenery. I was surprised that we didn't see anyone on the trail til we reached the upper steps. Before we knew it, we were at the lodge. We made it up in 3 hours and 20 minutes and were the first to check in. Luckily, the rain started after we checked in and we were shown to our cabin. Howard and Uncle David enjoyed relaxing on the porch. After awhile we stopped at the dining room for coffee and hot chocolate while on our way to the lodge to play cards all afternoon, since it was too cloudy to see any mountain views Before dinner we hiked up to Cliff Tops, so Uncle David could see where the sunset would have been. Some view isn't it. You have to imagine the beautiful mountains behind us! Dinner was wonderful as always and we had a great group to sit with. One gentleman was celebrating his birthday and we had two ladies from Knoxville that were very interesting to talk to. It ended up that one of the ladies, her dad hiked up Mt. LeConte hundreds of times and his journal was transcribed by Ed and is up at the lodge for others to read. Unfortunately, it was too foggy the next morning to see the sunrise. After breakfast, we headed back down. The rocks were slick but we managed to get down in a little over 2 hours. We all had a great time and can't wait til we get to do it again. Thanks for going with us Uncle Dave! |
