Frank and Sharon Umbdenstock's hike to Abrams falls on Oct 13, 2007

after a bout with breast cancer 2 yrs ago, my wife did not know if she would be able to go hikin again. so,
about 15 months after finishing chemo, we finally made it back to the wonderful Smokies. she wanted to hike
the chimneys just outside Gatlinburg, but with the chemo came joint problems, and her left knee wouldn't
do it. so, she wanted to try abrams falls in cades cove. she loves waterfalls, so she wanted to do it. so
on our last day in the Smokies, we drove to cades cove again, parked at the Abrams falls parking lot, grabbed
our drinks and a apple, and off we went.

what a beautiful walk it was. next to Abrams creek and under a gorgeous canopy, we truly enjoyed the
walk, the wonderful rippling of Abrams creek, and the beauty of the wonderful Smokies. we read that it was a
3 to 5 hr hike round trip, 2.5 miles one way. wifey said she was up to it. so i said lets go.

about half way, we started down a rather long incline, knowing we would be comin up this one comin back. no
problem!!!  after another incline and descent, we arrived at Abrams falls. what a wonderful sight. we
sat there for quite a while just taking in the falls like the rest of the people there. it was absolutely
gorgeous. and during this time, my wifey had one of the most relaxed smiles on her face i had seen in yrs.
her smile just glowed.  we took some pix, then headed back. she made it great back to our vehicle in no time
at all it seemed. we were both a little tired when we got back, but it was good tired, and ready to head home.
